A quick runway show proved the exposed G-string trend is here to stay as a number of models strutted their stuff at Paris Fashion Week with their underwear on full display.
But while some had hoped that the revival of the iconic 90s and Noughties fashion trend, labeled as “tacky” and “vulgar” by some online critics, would die out – it seems the controversial style is instead a level was obtained.
During the Luis de Javier Spring-Summer 2025 womenswear show, held at the Espace Niemeyer on Tuesday, the catwalk was flooded with underwear-clad models featuring purposefully accentuated jackets.
Think low-rise pants with delicate lace pulled up to the waist and see-through skirts with inner thongs.
There was even a bubble skirt that the model had to hold up because it sat at the top of her thighs, putting a few inches between it and the stringy white thong, which once again had a “V” at the waist.
While one might assume that the Spanish designer has inadvertently created a G-string conveyor belt due to the sheer nature of his clothing, it’s hard to avoid the fact that many of the tiny teen dresses aren’t covered by any fabric.
Case in point: The revealing outfit worn by model Riccardo Tisci, consisting of a cropped jacket, a beige G-string, shorts and socks.
It seems that Javier wanted her dresses to show more than the French-style black dresses, as there are pearls draped across the back to make her the star of the show.
The runway model, who has 3.2 million followers, was clearly not fazed by her bold look – revealing she was “proud to walk in de Javier’s debut in Paris”.
“I’m so glad I’ve been there to support you in this process… it’s no easy task to put out a collection in today’s world and if I’ve helped you find your identity just a little, then I’m happiest of all,” she wrote on Instagram.
Some of the outfits featured in Javier’s show toned down the shimmery underwear but still showed it off, such as
The one-shoulder design, which also featured a flared cape, featured a unique lace design that resembled a love heart shape.
Exposed G-strings, a cult look from Y2K, made a big comeback in 2022.
Despite the controversy surrounding wearing underwear as outerwear, the trend shows no signs of slowing down.
Critics have condemned the style, but the risky fashion choice “keeps coming back,” and for good reason, according to Vogue Australia.
“It’s not just nostalgia, the same thing that keeps the ’90s girl aesthetic coming back, Y2K and Tumblr 2014, that’s reviving a trend like this. Maybe it’s too annoying for that,” said writer Annie Brown.
“On the contrary, I think it is a taste provocation. In the wise words of TikTok girls everywhere, ‘girls who get it, get it, and girls who don’t, don’t’.
